Copyright & Legal Limits — What You Can and Can't Do
Downloading an X video for personal offline use is widely accepted, but there are clear limits on what you can legally do with downloaded content:
| Action | Generally OK? |
|---|---|
| Save to device for personal offline viewing | Yes |
| Share via private message (e.g. WhatsApp, iMessage) | Usually OK |
| Re-upload to YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc. | No — copyright violation |
| Use in a commercial project / ad | No — requires creator permission |
| Sell the downloaded video | No — illegal in most jurisdictions |
The original creator owns the copyright to their video regardless of where it was posted. Downloading doesn't transfer ownership or grant permission to republish.
